Day 8: how social media and blogging have affected my life.
Well, for starters I can absolutely say that Facebook keeps me in touch with people from high school, college, family, and work. That's a huge plus... Sometimes! Other times I wonder if there'll even be a point of a high school reunion. I think you could consider FB a never-ending one. Also, Zach would be blunt and tell you I'm addicted. After my alarm goes off in the morning, I lay in bed for a couple minutes checking up what I missed while I slept. Sad, right? Now that I see it in type, I think so. I feel like I always have to scroll back and check what all I missed while I was at work or any other lapse. I probably check it 10 times a day. I think having it so easily accessible on my phone makes it worse. Some night Zach has to say, "Ya gonna get off your phone or what?" Ouch. I can be very bad about zoning into it and not communicating with him. I have been trying to do better at this. Clearly he takes priority over status updates from people, some of who are mere acquaintances, but it's just so easy to get sucked in!
So, would I live without FB? Absolutely. My real life and activities come first. Am I going to abandon FB and give it up. Nooooo. I am going to try to limit myself to how many times I check it each day. I need to be present in the things I do, the conversations I have, and live my life!
Now, onto blogging. I don't have a lot if followers on here (Hi Mama, Hi Aunt Lynn, Hi Elyse!) but honestly I'm not blogging to talk about the newest gossip or trends. I started the blog as a way to document our lives, to remember feelings and experiences, and to let family see it. And that's what I still do. I do participate in these writing prompts like Blogtember because I like having fresh ideas to write about when I am in a rut. I also love to "stalk" (hey, I am calling it what it is!) people that are in the same stages of life That Zach and I are in and it's just something I enjoy. Zach will often lean over and joke, "And who are those people?" And I alway just admit I don't know them IRL, BUT I know their life story from their blog! Haha!
So, if I had to pick one over the other, I think I'd have to go with blogging. It serves more that fulfills me, and I hope to even get my posts printed in yearly books to serve as a diary/ calendar for us. It definitely is something I'll enjoy sharing with our kids someday, and I know once we have children, I'll use the blog to document their lives!
If you had to, which would you choose? Blogging or Facebook?
